Critical Mass
I haven't spent enough time in Jersey City to know the situation for bikes down there. I've seen a few people here and there, not unlike anywhere, but certainly nothing like a community. So, in the words of Pink Floyd:
Is there anybody out there?
This is a genuine question, not a plea. Now that there are at least two people out there reading this damn blog I figure I might get a response. Respond away! Or don't, but know that bikes are going to figure in in this space sooner or later.

i don't know, my man, but one of the first things i'm going to do when i move to fourth street next month is get a bike. it was just impractical to have one on grand street -- there was no place to store it, and i didn't want to be one of those tools with a bike hanging on his wall. plus the new place has alley egress. there used to be a really good bike shop on palisade avenue in the heights, but i don't know if it's there anymore...
This might help.
As an active cyclist in JC, I can say that there doesn't seem to be any organized group of cyclists. There don't even seem to be that many bikes on the street, or at least not nearly as many as a good little city should have. Chalk it up to the NYC commutes, perhaps, and the fact that bikes aren't allowed on the PATH during rush hour? Who knows.
I think there's one fundamental problem-- there's no bike store in jersey city! You'd think given the kind of community we live in they'd be prevalent.
indeed! that's always bothered me. (but that also goes beyond bicycles to the whole "retail in downtown JC" conundrum). anyway, the place is hoboken is ok, but keeps weird hours and is just a really tight space. i've heard the store in bayonne is pretty good, but i've never been. there are definitely lots of good rides around, though, but i end up relying on NYC's TransAlt for most of my info...
